Mong Kok Wet Market

Updated: Jun 19, 2019

I have always been fascinated by the energy and vibrant colours of wet markets from a young age. To me not only visiting wet markets is part of a daily routine, it is also part of my childhood memory when my mum or sometimes domestic helper brought me there, teaching me bits and bobs about selecting the best ingredients.

Wet market is also a collective hub for neighbourhoods and the community. It is always flooded with people who go there for the freshest food of the day: fruits and vegetables, or even living chickens and fish. However due to hygiene issues and increasing competitors like chained- supermarkets, wet markets are slowly being replaced.

Inspired by the style of travel magazines like Nat Geo Travel, I initiated this editorial/ photography project about the Mong Kok wet market which is 10 minutes away from where I live. I spent a day documenting the activities in the market through photography, during which my precious memories were brought back.
